Best drama movies on Netflix right now

One of the great things about Netflix is that no matter what mood you are in, you can always find something to watch. If you are in the mood for a moving with a small amount of dramatic flair or you are hoping for something that has more drama than a scene from a daytime soap opera, Netflix will have something. So here are just a few of the best drama movies that you can see on Netflix this February.

Children of Men (2006)

This sci-fi drama is a movie that didn’t do well at the box office, despite its critical acclaim, and yet since it has become a modern sci-fi classic. It is a rather bleak look at the future for man in which Clive Owen plays a disillusioned bureaucrat who becomes the most unlikely fighter in a future where the existence of the human race is threatened by widespread infertility. With the talents of Michael Caine and Julianne Moore thrown in, this is a movie that any drama addict will love.

The Departed (2006)

This Martin Scorsese epic is a movie that is loosely based on the life of mobster Whitey Bulger. Set in Massachusetts, the Irish mob sets a plant inside the state police, whilst a state trooper is sent undercover to infiltrate the mob’s ranks. With Jack Nicholson as the mob boss, Matt Damon as the undercover mobster and Leonardo DiCaprio as the undercover state trooper, it is no surprise that this movie is one of the most thrilling, suspenseful and dramatic movies to ever be made. It is not one to be missed.

Good Will Hunting (1997)

Though we could have found another brilliant drama movie on Netflix that first came out in 2006, there is no way that Good Will Hunting could possibly be left of any best drama movie list. The story of a brilliant young man who works as a janitor it follows every aspect of this life from his work life to his home life, his romance with Minnie Driver and the tutelage of Robin Williams. This movie is poignant, beautiful and it gave us Matt Damon and Ben Affleck at the very start of their careers.

Three Unusual Facts You Never Knew About Elvis Presley

If he had still been alive today, Elvis Aaron Presley would have been celebrating his 83rd birthday on January 8. To pay tribute to the undisputed King, here are three unusual facts about Elvis Presley you’ve never heard before.

#Fact 1: He released an album with no songs

In 1974, Elvis released an album which wasn’t part of his usual RCA contract. In a move devised by his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, a compilation was put together under the title of “Having Fun With Elvis on Stage”. As a spoken word album, it’s nothing more than clips of the King bantering with the audience. No context is provided and as such, many of the clips are hard to follow. Despite being universally panned the album was later repackaged and marketed by RCA.

#Fact 2: Elvis was a natural blond

The dark quiff of Elvis is one of his most famous trademarks, but what many of his fans don’t know is that his hair was dyed! Elvis was in fact, naturally a blond and had to regularly dye his locks to keep his much-loved, dark style.

#Fact 3: Elvis was determined to get into heaven

If you look closely at any photos of Elvis, you’ll see that he’s rather overburdened with jewelry in the neck region. Not content with just wearing a cross, Elvis also adorned himself with the star of David and the Chai Hebrew symbol. This confusion array of religious symbols is best explained by Elvis himself, “I don’t want to miss out on heaven due to a technicality.”

Comedy novels: for when you need a good laugh

Laughter is the best medicine, but you don’t have to be under the weather to enjoy a great humorous novel. There’s nothing like a book filled with chuckles to brighten up our mood, but good comedy writing is a rare art and the comic novel is a genre where good works are those which span the decades. Here are a few titles from down through the years which may have your belly shaking.
The Secret Life of Adrian Mole aged 13¾ by Sue Townsend
A hilarious look at the world through the eyes of a young teenage boy growing up in suburban Britain. Townsend’s wonderful creation Adrian Mole enlightens the reader through the form of his dairy and his insights range from girls and growing up to the stories on the news and the big bad world around him.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
A book which has stood the test of time. Yes, it’s a bit of an anarchic science-fiction tale about a mismatched group of travelers making their way across the galaxy but it’s also a humorous and satirical look at our own world. Adams draws characters who readers can identify with, despite the sci-fi setting and what you get is a witty social satire which is good for all eras.
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
Perhaps best known as a critically-acclaimed film which saw Ewan McGregor shoot to fame, Trainspotting started out as a novel by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh. Dark and dingy, the story of drug addicts in the rundown part of Edinburgh is nevertheless packed with hilarious events and often surreal humor. Not for the easily offended though.

6 Tips To Write a Totally Unpredictable Plot Twists

When writing mystery novels or crime thrillers everyone knows it’s all about the plot twist. It’s the key element that turns the book into a big success. However, writing a plot twist can be complicated and stressful, so we’ve created a guideline with the best tips on how to write a good and compelling plot twist.

1. Work backward: Plot twists work best when you plan them backward. Think of a crazy plot twist and see how you can complicate it as your work your way to the start. By using this technique you can hide the twist in plain sight and also make it very plausible. It’s also important to do this because a twist that just comes out of nowhere is a cheap twist. Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones have used this technique to help create shocking cliffhangers.
2. Get into the mindset of the reader: once you know what your twist is, try to write from the mindset of someone who is looking for a plot twist. In doing so you will be able to manipulate the reader and misdirect them away from the twist.
3. Layer the plot twist: use mini plot twists and subplots as a way to hide the main twist. People love hunting for the plot twist, the more elaborate your subplots are the more impacting your main twist will be.
4. Focus the twist on the characters, not just the action: twists cause shocks when you see how they affect the characters, not just the action. Betrayal and heartbreak are powerful tools, the impact of the twist is all about emotions.
5. Fake clues are your friend: think of clever fake clue you can naturally slip into the story without people realizing it’s a diversion. Maybe try to make the reader suspicious of several other characters. Use fake clues to make your story more complex but avoid building up to something you can’t deliver.
6. Show the consequences of the twist: twists don’t just have to come at the end, they’re not always the climax and even if they were it’s not where you should end the conflict. The effectiveness of the twist is also determined by the consequences it brings. How does this twist affect the resolution of the problem? Use the twist as a way to make the actual ending unpredictable. In Gone Girl, for example, the plot twist changed the storyline completely, suddenly it wasn’t about finding Amy but seeing how they were going to save Nick.
We hope you found this useful. However if you want to investigate how best to write a plot twist we recommend looking into Gillian Flynn’s work, which you can find right here www.mediagemm.com.
