Comedy novels: for when you need a good laugh

Laughter is the best medicine, but you don’t have to be under the weather to enjoy a great humorous novel. There’s nothing like a book filled with chuckles to brighten up our mood, but good comedy writing is a rare art and the comic novel is a genre where good works are those which span the decades. Here are a few titles from down through the years which may have your belly shaking.
The Secret Life of Adrian Mole aged 13¾ by Sue Townsend
A hilarious look at the world through the eyes of a young teenage boy growing up in suburban Britain. Townsend’s wonderful creation Adrian Mole enlightens the reader through the form of his dairy and his insights range from girls and growing up to the stories on the news and the big bad world around him.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
A book which has stood the test of time. Yes, it’s a bit of an anarchic science-fiction tale about a mismatched group of travelers making their way across the galaxy but it’s also a humorous and satirical look at our own world. Adams draws characters who readers can identify with, despite the sci-fi setting and what you get is a witty social satire which is good for all eras.
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
Perhaps best known as a critically-acclaimed film which saw Ewan McGregor shoot to fame, Trainspotting started out as a novel by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh. Dark and dingy, the story of drug addicts in the rundown part of Edinburgh is nevertheless packed with hilarious events and often surreal humor. Not for the easily offended though.
